Minor plumbing leaks will eventually happen in every home. Sometimes they can be repaired with a simple turn of a wrench. Some situations may require a plumber.

Skill level: moderate to difficult
What if I don’t do this? A small problem can become an expensive repair

Step 1: Locate Main Water Shut Off

Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms; they all have multiple water connections. In case a leak develops, you should know where the main water shut off valve is for your home. It will be located in a basement, utility room, or closet.

Step 2: Inspect For Problems

Check under sinks, behind toilets, at valve stems, and in laundry rooms for signs of water dripping or mineral deposits.

Step 3: Making Repairs

Many small leaks can be repaired by a simple tightening of a fitting. Always shut off the main water supply before attempting any repair. To fix a valve stem leak, open the valve slightly and turn the nut 1/8th to 1/4 turn at the base of the stem. Blot dry with a rag and turn water back on. Never over-tighten any fittings! If in doubt about any water leak, contact a licensed plumber to repair. See also: Dealing With Moisture Sources
