Sump Pump Maintenance

Sump pumps require very little homeowner maintenance, but it's important to keep the area around them clean and clear of clutter.

Time Needed: 20 minutes
Frequency: once each spring
Number of steps: 3
Tools you might need: none
Skill level: easy

Step 1: Locate Discharge Pipe

Sump pumps move water from under the foundation of your home to the outside. Locate the discharge pipe outside your home and make sure it is never blocked. See also: Moisture Outside Your Home

Step 2: Locate Sump Basket

Pumps are located in a plastic basket below the foundation of your home. Usually they are located in a corner and can be identified by a round plastic lid with a plastic pipe coming out of the center. Keep area clean and clear of clutter.

Step 3: Make Sure It Works

Fill sump basket with water to see if the pump drains the water. Look for any leaks indoors. Check outdoors to make sure the water is draining away from the house. Never sweep debris into the sump basket opening! Never unplug power supply to sump pump except when cleaning or servicing.
