Measuring Relative Humidity

The best way to determine if your relative humidity is too high or too low is to measure it with a hygrometer or relative humidity gauge. There are two types, mechanical and electronic hygrometers. Either is readily available and can be purchased at a hardware store or building supply store. If it is calibrated properly, it will provide you with a good measure of your indoor relative humidity levels.

Since hygrometers are light and small, you will only need one for your house. Place them in areas where the moisture issue is in question. Be careful not to place it near direct heat like a heat register or radiator. The hygrometer will not give you an instantaneous reading and may take a couple of hours before it accurately responds to a new location or a sudden change in moisture conditions.

Calibrating Your Hygrometer

You should calibrate your hygrometer at least once a year.
